Junior Keelboat Regatta

On Sunday, August 10, the Corinthian Yacht Club will run the second annual Junior Keelboat Regatta. Open to all MRA sailing classes, this event is designed to introduce junior sailors to keelboat racing. All skippers must be under the age of 23, but crew can be any age. As many of our local juniors progress through learn-to-sail, introductory racing, or advanced racing classes, this regatta is a great way to test their sailing skills in a larger boat as well as learn the teamwork necessary to sail a multi-person boat rather than a single person dinghy.
During last years event we had sons and daughters sailing with their parents, junior crew taking the helm while the boat owners/skippers moved into a crew position, and some junior racers out as full junior team. The racing was competitive and fun, and there were smiles that were difficult to wipe off the faces of sailors young and old(er).
We encourage fleet captains of the MRA classes to encourage their members to promote this event as a way of introducing juniors to keelboat racing and further develop active participation in their respective fleets. |
